Announcement of the Inauguration of the Israeli Association for Military-Society Studies

Dr. Reuven Gal

I wish to announce the creation of a new scholarly society, the Israeli Association for Military-Society Studies.

The idea of creating such an association has been with me and other Israelis, such as Moshe Lissak, since the opening ceremony of the Israeli Institute for Military Studies in 1986. That organization was established with the encouragement and assistance of Morris Janowitz, who also served as its Founding Chair. David Segal and Charlie Moskos were also our guests on that occasion, and we all agreed that Israel is a natural hub for such an association. The number of Israeli scholars who concentrate on military- society studies -- many of them longtime members of the IUS -- has now grown to more than a hundred, and this idea has now come to fruition.

The newly-born Israeli Association for Military-Society Studies is inspired and motivated by the IUS, and we expect a significant overlap in our membership. Indeed, membership in our new association should help draw other scholars to the IUS. We hope it will be not only a network of researchers, but also a 'family of colleagues' and an incubator for innovative ideas and influence on national policy -- as is true also for the IUS.

My sincere hope as the first Chairman of the Israeli Association for Military- Society Studies is that this new body will serve as a stimulating platform for young Israeli researchers and a network for exchanging ideas. In addition, we will strive to make this new body of Israeli professionals one that will foster, a better, stronger, and more moral society, build bridges of tolerance, and help to achieve a sustainable peace between Israel and its neighbors.

On December 14th and 15th, 2011, we will have our inaugural conference on the shores of the Lake of Galilee. We are pleased that we will be joined there by Jay Williams, Bernard Boëne, and Christopher Dandeker. In future years I hope to see many more of you with us, as well.

On behalf of myself and the other Israeli scholars forming this new association, I thank you all for your encouragement and support.
