TROUBLE ACCESSING MATERIAL FROM WITHIN A SAGE WEBSITE

To gain access to Armed Forces & Society online through the Sage website, you do not need to register with Sage, create a Sage account, or establish a Sage username or password. Similarly, your IUS Fellows-Only Section username and password are not usable on Sage websites. These are two completely different system of authentification.

Your identity as a Fellow of the IUS is authenticated through the IUS Fellows-Only Section of the IUS website. To gain Fellows-only access to Sage publications, you must enter the Sage sites through the IUS website by clicking on the appropriate links in the Fellows-Only Section. If you go directly to a Sage website, you will not be recognized as an IUS Fellow and will, therefore, be denied access.

If the IUS website has successfully transmitted your status as an authorized IUS user to the Sage Armed Forces & Society site, you will see the following notation near the top of the Sage site:

"Institution: Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society"

If you see this notation, your identity as an IUS Fellow has been successfully transmitted and you may now access materials on the Sage site at no charge.

If you do not see this notation, your identity as an IUS Fellow has not been successfully transmitted to the Sage site. This is a communication problem between the IUS site and the Sage site.

If you encounter this problem, do not attempt to enter a username and password directly into the Sage site. This will not resolve the problem; your IUS username and password are not compatible with the Sage system.

If you encounter this problem, do not create a user account directly with the Sage site. This will not resolve the problem. As a Fellow of the IUS, you are entitled to free online access; creating an account directly with Sage will only cost your unnecessary fees.

If you encounter this problem, the origin is likely one of the following:

Your Browser Version
Your Browser Security Setting
Your Firewall or Antivirus Program Blocking User Information

This problem may be resolved by taking one or more of the following actions:

Browser Version

The user will need to be using a current web browser on any computer platform. Internet Explorer (6.0 or higher) is recommended.

Browser Security Setting

The browser should be set with medium security or lower. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options, the Security tab, and then set to Medium (or lower).

Firewall

If a personal firewall is activated, it must be deactivated.

Antivirus Program

If an antivirus program is running on your PC, e.g. Norton AnitiVirus, it should be temporarily deactivated.

Trouble logging into the Fellow-Only Section of the IUS website

If you encounter this problem, the origin is likely one of the following:

Your Browser Version
Your Browser Security Setting
Your Firewall or Antivirus Program Blocking User Information

This problem may also be resolved by taking one or more of the action noted in the preceding section.

Still can't get access?

Once all of the above solutions have been implemented, the user should attempt to access the problem site again.

If these solutions do not work, and if the user has access to another computer, the user should attempt to gain online access on a different computer. This can help determine if the problem is with the user's computer or with the online system.

If none of these solutions work, please contact the webmaster. Please be sure that you have read this FAQ thoroughly and have attempted all of the suggested solutions before contacting technical support.

When contacting technical support, be sure to include all of the following information in your query:

  1. IUS Fellows-Only Section username
  2. IUS Fellows-Only Section password
  3. operating system the user is using
  4. internet browser the user is using
  5. whether or not a firewall or antivirus program is running on the user's computer, as well as the name of the antivirus program being used

Inquiries to technical support that do not include all of the above information cannot be answered.
