Evolving Security:  Expansion or Fragmentation?

The 2020 IUS Canada Conference will be held at the Lord Elgin Hotel in Ottawa, Ontario from the 23-25 October. This year’s conference theme seeks to examine security, defined broadly, and the implications of emerging strategies for managing security-related issues. Internationally, governments, international organizations and regional blocs appear to be heading in very different directions regarding security objectives. Military roles are mirrored domestically in different perspectives on where the focus of effort should be, and on what a nation should expect from their armed forces. Can we find coherence in this changing landscape? Or are we seeing a fragmentation of effort and understanding that will pose new challenges to future security?

Papers aligned with the conference theme are eagerly solicited. Papers in all areas touching on defence and security in national and international contexts are also welcome. As per IUS Canada tradition, panel submissions (3-4 papers) are very welcome, and every effort will be made to group individually submitted papers into relevant panels. Submissions from graduate students who wish to be considered for the Frank Pinch Award for best Graduate Student Paper should be clearly identified as such.

Proposals (250-300 word abstracts, complete contact information for presenting authors) must be received no later than 15 June, 2020. Selection decisions will be communicated to presenting authors in August, 2020. Final papers must be received by the programme chair (Dr. Sarah Hill; sarah.hill@rmc.ca) on or before 1 October 2020 or they will not be included in the conference archive, and may be dropped from the conference agenda.

All submissions must be made using the downloadable form on the IUS website (Click here to download the form). Once completed, the form should be sent via direct email to the programme chair (sarah.hill@rmc.ca).

Unfortunately, ongoing fiscal realities mean that IUS Canada is not in a position to subsidize travel or accommodation again this year. We are making every effort to maintain the low cost of the conference, however, to facilitate maximum participation. Registration details are currently being finalized, and information will be posted on this site as soon as it becomes available (estimated publication window – the latter half of June).

We look forward to seeing you in Ottawa in October!
